Sunkiss Supports Desert Ecological Restoration Project

The Process Of Taklamakan Desert Turn Into A “Green Oasis Of Forests”

Before 1950, the Taklamakan Desert was an arid, water-scarce region. Each year, the first generation of local residents planted trees and created windbreaks in hopes of protecting their homes from relentless sandstorms. Despite their efforts, sandstorms continued to affect the area year after year.

After more than half a century of perseverance across three generations, a new oasis city has emerged along the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, spanning more than 6,900 square kilometers.

By 2023, Alar City's forested land had reportedly reached 2.22 million mu, accounting for 22% of its total area. Its forest area was reported at 2.2982 million mu, with a forest coverage rate of 19.3%.

A Major Breakthrough

In 2023, the introduction of the Sunshine Alar Photovoltaic Power Station marked an important development in the region's desert ecological restoration efforts.

The project applies an integrated model described as:

Power generation above the panels, planting between the panels, and ecological restoration beneath the panels.

This approach brings the concept of forest-and-grass photovoltaic development to life. Grass has begun to grow beneath the solar panels, creating a visible contrast with the barren desert landscape that covered the area when construction first began.


SUNKISS Joins the Oasis Ocean Technology Service Program

The SUNKISS Research Center was an early adopter of photovoltaic roofing and has supported corporate energy-conservation and emissions-reduction initiatives.

On December 4, 2023, SUNKISS joined other participating companies in sponsoring the construction of solar installations covering 4,000 mu—approximately 667 acres.

The initiative helps stabilize sand dunes in the Taklamakan Desert and creates conditions in which plant seeds may take root rather than drift with the wind.

Through this effort, photovoltaic technology can contribute to desertification control while supporting a more integrated local ecosystem:

  • Solar panels generate renewable electricity.
  • Vegetation beneath and between the panels helps stabilize the soil.
  • Pasture grasses can support livestock raising.
  • Managed livestock activity may contribute to the broader restoration cycle.
